The citadel, originally the palace of Herod I the Great. In later centuries it was used as a palace by the Romans and the Crusaders.
Herod completed his palace complex with three huge towers, the design of the largest of which was copied from the famous Alexandrian lighthouse of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It is here that Pontius Pilate is said to have judged Jesus Christ (John 18:28-19:16).
